In Memory

In memory of the San Lorenzo Dog Training Club members who are gone but not forgotten.

Jackie Smith

Jackie Smith Jackie started training in a beginning class at San Lorenzo Dog Training Club in September of 1972 with a 9 month old American Foxhound - Benji. In 1975, she and her husband Bob got a Golden Retriever, Ami, as a companion for the Foxhound. They were best buddies and the Golden was a much easier dog to train than the Foxhound. Ami got her CDX title as did the yellow Labrador Retriever Darcy that followed. Next, Jackie got a black Labrador Lacy, who earned her Utility degree. Lacy was followed by another black Labrador, Meg, and her youngest black Labrador, JJ.

Jackie became a member of the San Lorenzo Dog Training Club in 1974. Over the years, she held several different Board positions, culminating in her election as Club President in 1999, a post which she held for 11 years. Jackie's enthusiasm for SLDTC was unparalleled. She was a tireless worker at countless SLDTC matches, workshops and trials, and served as Chief Ring Steward many times. In addition, she was the Club's membership chair, maintained the membership banners, managed the keys to the building, put together the program for the holiday awards dinner, answered the club's phone during the day, and was a frequent desk worker. Jackie loved to see new people enter the sport of dogs, and mentored and encouraged many new members. She was always very supportive at trials and cheered you on from the sidelines when you were in the ring. When your dog did well, no one was happier for you than Jackie.

Jackie wrote "Along with enjoying the training of our dogs and the enjoyment of knowing many other dogs, the most important aspect of being involved in the sport of dogs is the friends that I have made over the years."

In 2004, the annual SLDTC Obedience Trial was dedicated to the honor of Jackie for her 30 years of membership in the club. Jackie will be dearly missed.

Margo Lacey

Margo Lacey was a member of San Lorenzo Dog Training Club for almost 40 years. Originally from England, she moved to the United States in the 1940s when she married an American. Margo was known for her Dobermans. When she was made an honorary member of SLDTC in 2006, she remarked: "I have always trained Dobermans. My introduction came in the early 1970s with a rescue bitch, from then on there was no turning back." Margo's Dobermans were versatile, multi-ring dogs. Included among the obedience, tracking, and rally titles they earned were 3 conformation champions (Promise, Jezebel, and Ethan), 3 UDs (Juliette, Traveler, and Jezebel), 1 UDX (Promise), 1 UDTX (Promise), and several others. All of her conformation champions had high-level obedience degrees as well. Although Margo would fondly call her Dobermans "naughty", they were happy dogs who loved to work and, most of all, loved their mom. Margo's sweet spirit (and great sense of humor) will be missed at SLDTC.
